Party Leaders

Canadian Election 2015

A party is a group of people who share similar ideas.

There are four main parties in this election:
The Conservative Party, the Liberal Party, the New Democratic Party, and the Green Party.

Every party has a leader. The leader will become the Prime Minister if their party gets more votes than any other party in the election.

The Conservative leader is Stephen Harper. He's Prime Minister right now. He has won three elections before, and been Prime Minister for almost 10 years. Some people think he's doing a good job, some people think it's time for someone new to be in charge.

The Liberal leader is Justin Trudeau. He is a bit younger than all the other leaders, he's only 43, but he's lived in the Prime Minister's mansion before. Trudeau's father, Pierre Trudeau was Prime Minister in the 1970's. While Justin was growing up, his father was Prime Minister. Some people think that his father, Pierre, was one of the best Prime Minister's ever. A lot of people think that Justin will do a good job because he, in some ways, might take after his father.

The NDP leader is Thomas Mulcair. He's from Quebec, and he has had plenty of jobs in the Quebec government before. There has never been a Prime Minister from the NDP party, and some people think it's time to give the NDP a chance to be in charge.

The leader of the Green Party is Elizabeth May. She won't be become Prime Minister because her party is not large enough yet, they don't have all that many members. But, she has worked hard over the years to grow her party and encourage more people to vote Green. Even if she won't win, she has some good ideas on how to help the environment, and an election is a good time to talk about those kinds of things. Maybe in a few years, her party will be more popular.
