Romeo and Juliet

Prologue:

Two households, both alike in dignity,

In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,

From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,

Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.

From forth the fatal loins of these two foes

A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;

Whose misadventured piteous overthrows

Do with their death bury their parents' strife.

The fearful passage of their death-mark'd love,

And the continuance of their parents' rage,

Which, but their children's end, nought could remove,

Is now the two hours' traffic of our stage;

The which if you with patient ears attend,

What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.

Act 1 Scene 1: Verona. A public place.

(Enter Sampson and Gregory, of the house of Capulet, armed with swords)

Gregory: The quarrel is between our masters and us their men.

Sampson: I'm in the mood for a fight.

Gregory: Here comes the Montagues!

Sampson: My sword is out.

Gregory: I got you're back.

Sampson: I will bite my thumb at them.

(enter Abraham and Balthasar)

(Sampson bites his thumb right in their face)

Abraham: Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?

Sampson: I do bite my thumb, sir.

Abraham: Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?

Sampson: No, sir, I do not bite my thumb at you, sir, but I bite my thumb, sir.

Balthasar: Are you looking for a fight?

Sampson: Bring it!

Abraham: Come at me bro!

(they fight)

(enter Benvolio running)

Benvolio: Stop! Put down your swords. Stop!

(enter Tybalt slowly)

Tybalt: Look who's gotten into a bit of a fight, the Montague's and the Capulet's.

Benvolio: We don't want any trouble. I'm trying to keep the peace.

Tybalt: Don't talk of peace! I hate the word, as I hate all Montagues.

Benvolio: How dare you!

(they fight)

(enter prince)

Prince: If this fighting doesn't stop, I'm calling in the troops.

(Enter Capulet and Lady Capulet from left)
Capulet: Enough of this!
Lady Capulet: Oh dear...

(Enter Montague and Lady Montague and from right)

Montague: Perhaps you should try to control your family.
Capulet: May family, how dare you...
Prince: Enough. Enough fighting, all of you.

(Exit all except Benvolio)

Act 1 Scene 2: The Street

(Enter Romeo)

Benvolio: What's wrong cousin?
Romeo: None of your business.
Benvolio: Aw, come on.
Romeo: It's a girl, the most wonderful girl I've ever met..
Benvolio: Rosaline?
Romeo: Maybe.

Benvolio: It is Rosaline. You've been talking about her for weeks.

Romeo: It is Rosaline, I can't stop thinking about her.

Benvolio: You need to do something to get your mind off of her.

(Exit all)

Act 1 Scene 3: The Mansion

(Enter Paris, Capulet and Lady Capulet, Nurse already on)

Capulet: Good day Paris, you're here to speak to us about our daughter?

Paris: Juliet's really something.

Lady Capulet: She is wonderful.
Paris: So, can I marry her?
Capulet: She's only thirteen, but... you have my consent, and my wife's consent. Paris, we approve of and will arrange your marriage to my daughter Juliet.

Nurse: I will go tell Juliet the news!

Capulet: Thank you nurse.

(Exit nurse)

(Exit all)

Act 1 Scene 4: The Street

(Mercutio, Benvolio and Romeo walk slowly across stage)

Mercutio: Tickets! To a party! A costume party at the Capulet mansion.

Mercutio: Crashing a Capulet party will make you feel better. It'll make you forget all about Rosaline.
Romeo: We're not invited to that party, not at all.

Benvolio: It's a costume party, no one will know we're there.

Romeo: There could be real trouble.

Benvolio: Isn't that that point!

Act 1 Scene 5: Juliet's Bedroom

(Enter Lady Capulet, Nurse and Juliet already on)

Lady Capulet: So, Juliet, what do you think about marrying Paris?
Juliet: He's ok, I guess.
Nurse: She'll look so pretty in a nice white dress!
Juliet: Hey, don't I get to decide who I'm going to marry?

Nurse and Lady Capulet: No!

Act 2 Scene 1: The Mansion

(Juliet stands off to the side, Benvolio talking to a girl, Mercutio, Romeo talking)

Mercutio: Let's go, this party is boring. Come on.

(Mercutio pulls Benvolio away)

Romeo: Hold on, who's that girl...

(Romeo walks over to Juliet, they talk, Mercutio, Benvolio, walk away)

(Mercutio returns, pulls Romeo away by the arm)

Romeo: Who is that girl?

Benvolio: She's a Capulet. Stay away.

(Exit Romeo, Benvolio, Mercutio right)

Juliet: Who's that boy?

Girl: He's a Montague. Stay away.

(Exit Juliet and girl left)

(Enter Romeo, runs across stage, exits left after Juliet)

Act 2 Scene 2: Juliet's Balcony

(Enter Romeo, below)

(Enter Juliet on balcony)

Romeo: [Aside] But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.

Juliet: Aye, me...
Romeo: [Aside] She speaks: O, speak again, bright angel!

Juliet: O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I'll no longer be a Capulet.
Romeo: [Aside] Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?
Juliet: 'Tis but thy name that is my enemy; Thou art thyself, though not a Montague. What's in a name? that which we call a rose

By any other name would smell as sweet.

Romeo: I take thee at thy word: Call me but love, and I never will be Romeo.

Juliet: Who's down there in the bushes!!

Romeo: Oh, uh, me, Romeo, remember, we met, like 5 minutes ago. I climbed into your backyard, love guided me to you, love guided me over the walls.

Juliet: If they do see thee, they will murder thee.

Romeo: It doesn't matter. I'll risk it. I need to tell you something!

Juliet: (Breathless) What!

Romeo: I love you.

Nurse: [From offstage] Juliet!

Juliet: I hear a noise from within!

Nurse: [From offstage] Juliet!

Romeo: Marry me!

Juliet: By and by I come! I have to go.

Romeo: Marry me!

Juliet: Tomorrow I will answer you. Good night, good night, a thousand times good night.

(Exit Juliet)

Act 2 Scene 3: Church

(Enter Romeo, Friar Laurence already on)

Romeo: Hey, guess what?
Friar Laurence: Do I want to know?
Romeo: I met a girl last night and I want to marry her.
Friar Laurence: Weren't you in love with Rosaline yesterday?
Romeo: What's your point?
Friar Laurence: So who is this new person?

Romeo: Juliet Capulet.
Friar Laurence: This could be a problem...

Act 2 Scene 4: Street

Mercutio: Where is Romeo?
Benvolio: I have no idea. I haven't seen him since the party last night.
(Enter Romeo)

Romeo: Hey, guys!
Mercutio: Where have you been?
Romeo: Umm...

(Enter nurse)
Nurse: Hello, young men.
Benvolio: (arm around nurse) Well, hello!

Nurse: Get your hands off me you baboon. Which one of you is Romeo.
Romeo: I am.

Nurse: I have a message from Juliet.

Romeo: What!

Nurse: Her answer is yes.
Romeo: Tell Juliet to come to the church.
(Exit nurse)

Act 2 Scene 5: Church

(Romeo and Juliet stand holding hands)

Friar Laurence: I now pronounce you man and wife.

Act 3 Scene 1: Street

Benvolio: It is way too hot out.
Mercutio: There's worse things then a hot day.

(Enter Tybalt)
Tybalt: I'm looking for Romeo.
Mercutio: You! Why would we tell you.
(Enter Romeo)

Romeo: Hi everyone!
Tybalt: Punk! I know it was you who crashed the party last night.
Romeo: No, you don't understand. I have no problem with you.
Tybalt: Maybe so, but I - have - a - problem - with - you. I dare you to fight me.
Romeo: I don't want to fight you. We're family now.
Tybalt: Family? What are you talking about? You crashed our party. Draw your sword.

(Tybalt draws his sword)
Mercutio: Tybalt, back off.

(Tybalt shoves Mercutio)

(Mercutio draws his sword)

(They fight)
Mercutio: The blade! My heart.

(Mercutio stumbles, Romeo runs to him)
Benvolio: Are you hurt?

Mercutio: Ay, ay, a scratch, a scratch.

Romeo: It's worse

Mercutio: It's worse. I'm dying. A plague! A plague on both your houses!

(Mercutio dies)

Romeo: You killed my best friend! You filthy animal!

(Tybalt, Romeo fight)
Romeo: Either thou, or I, or both, must go with him.

(Tybalt dies)
Romeo: What have I done? I just killed Juliet's cousin.

Benvolio: Romeo, away, be gone! The citizens are angry, and Tybalt is dead.

(Exit Romeo)

(Enter Prince)

Prince: Benvolio, who began this bloody fray?

Benvolio: Tybalt, here slain, whom Romeo's hand did slay. Tybalt slew Mercutio, and Romeo slew Tybalt.

Prince: I charge Romeo with the death of Tybalt. Romeo is banished.

Act 3 Scene 2: Bedroom

(Enter nurse, Juliet already on)

Juliet: I'm going to see Romeo again today, mother will understand, they'll come to understand. I won't have to marry Paris, and Romeo and I can build our life together. Mother and Father just need to accept Romeo. I'm sure they will.
Nurse: We can hope my dear.

(Enter Capulet and Lady Capulet)
Lady Capulet: Romeo killed Tybalt, Romeo must not live.

Capulet: He killed him. A death to Romeo and to all Montagues.

Juliet: [Aside] Ahhh! My husband that I met yesterday and married today just killed my cousin! This is the worst.

(Enter Prince)

Prince: Tybalt is gone, and Romeo banished; Romeo that kill'd him, he is banished.

Act 3 Scene 3: Church

(Enter Romeo, Friar, Nurse already on)

Romeo: So what's the deal?
Friar Laurence: You're banished from Verona.
Romeo: Really? Now what?
Friar Laurence: It's better than being executed.
Romeo: To live without Juliet? It's worse.
Nurse: Before you go be banished, Juliet wants you to know she loves you.
Romeo: Tell her I love her.

(Exit Romeo)

Act 3 Scene 4 - Mansion

(Enter Lady Capulet and Capulet, Paris already on)

Lady Capulet: The wedding plans are set.

Capulet: Juliet has been acting odd, she seems upset. We're going to speed the wedding up. You will marry her tomorrow.

Paris: Sounds good to me!

Act 3 Scene 5 - Church

Friar Laurence: Isn't tomorrow a little soon to get married?
Paris: What's your point?
Friar Laurence: Here comes Juliet!
Paris: Ok, I'll sneak away, I shouldn't see her until the wedding.

(Exit Paris)
Juliet: Romeo is banished! And mom wants me to marry Paris! And Romeo's banished! And Tybalt's dead! And Romeo's banished! And my father wants to disown me! And Romeo's banished! And....
Friar Laurence: I get the picture.
Juliet: What should I do? You need to help me. Please.
Friar Laurence: I can help you. If you're you're willing.

Juliet: Anything...

Friar Laurence: (holds up potion) Take this potion. It will make you sleep for two days. All who see you will think you've died. After you're laid to rest, Romeo can meet you at the cemetery. You two can sneak away and live happily every after.

Juliet: I can't think of anything that could go wrong with this plan. How will Romeo know about it?
Friar Laurence: I'll write him a letter, post-haste.

Act 4 Scene 1: Mansion

Capulet: Hmm, yes, twenty cooks, twenty five maids, and a big white dress....
Lady Capulet: A feast, a grand feast..

Nurse: Twenty cooks, twenty five maids, and a big white dress, , a grand feast, ok...

(Enter Juliet)

Juliet: Hi everyone.
Capulet: You look like you're feeling better.
Juliet: I am, I'm not as upset about... about Tybalt anymore.
Lady Capulet: That's good dear.

Juliet: I'm just going up to my room to... to rest.

(Exit Juliet)

Act 4 Scene 2: Bedroom

Juliet: Farewell! God knows when we shall meet again. What if this mixture do not work at all? Shall I be married then to-morrow morning? No, no: this shall forbid it!

(Juliet drinks)

Juliet: I really hope this works. If all goes well I should wake up in two days.

(Juliet falls on her bed)

Act 4 Scene 3: Bedroom

Nurse: Juliet!
Capulet: She has perished.
Lady Capulet: The wedding!

Nurse: Oh, Juliet.

Act 5 Scene 1: Far, far away

Romeo: I can't stand being out here. I can't stand being so far away from home. I can't stand being away from Juliet.

(Enter Abraham and Balthazar)

Abraham: Juliet... She died.

Balthazar: Just yesterday, by her own hand.
Abraham: They are laying her to rest in the Capulet family crypt.

(After a moment, Romeo picks up a bottle)

Balthazar: That there, what is that you have there.

Romeo: It will end my life. If I can't live with Juliet, I'll die with her.

(Exit Romeo)

Abraham: Romeo, don't...

Act 5 Scene 2: Church

Friar Laurence: No matter what, make sure Romeo gets this letter. It tells him the plan. It tells him Juliet's not really dead. It is of the utmost importance.
Friar John: You can count on me.

(Messenger exits, dropping the letter on the way)

Act 5 Scene 3: Cemetery

(Juliet lies dead)

(Enter Paris)

Paris: We never had out life together.
(Enter Romeo)

Romeo: Who are you?

Paris: I was supposed to marry Juliet.

Romeo: How dare you say such things. I was already married to you.

Paris: I know who you are. You killed Tybalt. You're the reason Juliet has died.

(Paris draws his sword)

(They fight, Paris dies)

Act 5 Scene 6: Cemetery

Romeo: O my love! my wife! Death, that hath suck'd the honey of thy breath,

Hath had no power yet upon thy beauty. Here, here will I remain

(Romeo turns away, Juliet begins to move)

Here will I set up my everlasting rest. Here's to my love!

(Juliet rises, moves towards Romeo)

(Romeo drinks poison, turns, sees Juliet, dies)

(Romeo lies dead)

(Paris lies dead)

(Juliet kneels at Romeo's side)

Juliet: Oh, Romeo, Romeo. Why? Why? What am I to do now. (Picks up bottle) Maybe there's some poison left in the bottle.

(Drinks)

Juliet: It didn't work. Without Romeo, I can't live. Oh, happy dagger! Goodbye, goodbye.

(Juliet dies)

(Enter Prince, Capulet, Lady Capulet, Friar Laurence, Montague, Lady Montague, Benvolio)

Prince: What happened here!
Friar Laurence: Two star-cross'd lovers.

Benvolio: They took their life.
Montague: I'm.. sorry. I'm sorry about your daughter.
Capulet: I'm... sorry about your son.

(Capulet and Montague hug)
